The Key to Personal Transformation

What I shared on the TEDx stage — and why it still applies to any business owner who has ever felt stuck.

A few years ago, I stood on a red circle in Visalia, California, in front of a live audience, and told the truth about the darkest season of my life.

No slides. No safety net. Just me, a microphone, and 16 minutes to say what I had spent years learning the hard way.

That talk — The Key to Personal Transformation — is on YouTube now with over 1,700 views. But more than the numbers, it represents the foundation that everything I do is built on: transformation is not a moment. It is a process.

If you have never heard it, I want to walk you through the core of what I shared — because it applies whether you are fighting depression, rebuilding a business, or just trying to get unstuck.

When External Success Cannot Fix Internal Brokenness

I opened the talk by describing what it feels like to be a high-functioning person who is quietly falling apart.

I had built businesses. I had made money. I looked fine from the outside. But inside, I was running on empty — and eventually I hit a wall that no amount of hustle could push through.

"I didn't want to be here anymore. I didn't want to do this anymore... It wasn't that I wanted to die, I just wanted the pain to stop."

That is depression. If you have been there, you know exactly what I mean. If you have not, I hope this gives you a window into what someone you love might be carrying.

Saying that out loud on a stage in front of strangers was terrifying. But I have learned that the things we are most afraid to say are usually the things that need to be said the most.

The 5-Second Rule — Small Actions Beat Big Intentions

In the talk, I referenced Mel Robbins' 5-Second Rule as one of the tools that pulled me out of the fog. The concept is simple: when you have an impulse to act on a goal, you have five seconds to move before your brain kills the idea.

Not a morning routine. Not a 90-day plan. Just: have the impulse, count backward, move.

I used it to get out of bed on days when bed felt like the only safe place. I used it to start exercising when exercise felt impossible. I used it to face the day when facing the day felt like too much.

The lesson: your brain is not always your friend when it comes to action. You have to move before the doubt arrives. Transformation lives in the gap between impulse and hesitation.

The Process: Awareness, Responsibility, Action

The center of the talk is what I call the process of transformation. No shortcut. But there is a sequence.

1. Awareness. Acknowledge exactly where you are — without judgment, without spin, without excuses. You cannot navigate from a location you will not admit you are in.

2. Responsibility. You may not be responsible for your trauma or your depression. But you are responsible for your recovery. No one is coming to save you. That is not a harsh truth — it is a liberating one.

3. Action over intent. We judge ourselves by our intentions. The world judges us by our actions. Transformation has to show up in what we do — not just what we mean to do.

That third one is where most people stop. It is easy to live in intention. It requires nothing but the feeling of wanting to change. Action requires something of you. That is the whole game.

What I Want You to Take Away

I closed with a message about depression and about patience.

"When it comes to depression... don't expect other people to understand what it is you're going through... we're not really capable of it unless we've been through it ourselves. So be patient with them and be patient with yourself... I just don't want you to live there."

I do not want you to visit the darkness. I want you to move through it.

And I said something else that I still believe more today than I did then: TED talks are about ideas worth sharing. But I want this to be about actions worth taking.

Ideas do not build businesses. Ideas do not heal marriages. Ideas do not get you out of bed when depression says stay. Actions do.

It is the story they are telling themselves about what is possible.
