The Phone Test — How to Know in 60 Seconds Whether Your Middle Tennessee Business Is Winning or Losing the AI Search Revolution

By Steve Cory | Cory Media Group | Shelbyville, Tennessee

I want you to stop reading for a moment.

Pick up your phone.

Open ChatGPT — or Google AI, or Perplexity, or just ask Siri. It doesn't matter which one. Pick the AI tool you use most naturally.

Now type — or say — this query. Fill in your own business category and your own city.

"Who is the best [your business category] in [your city] Tennessee?"

Read what comes back.

Is your business in the answer?

If it is — congratulations. You are winning the AI search revolution in your market. The work is paying off. Keep building.

If it isn't — you just found the most important problem in your business. Not your pricing. Not your staffing. Not your equipment or your inventory or your service quality.

Your AI search invisibility.

And it's costing you customers every single day.

Why This Test Matters More Than Any Marketing Report You've Ever Seen

I've spent this entire blog series — one hundred posts covering every market, every vertical, every AI platform, and every optimization strategy in Middle Tennessee — building toward this single moment.

The moment you pick up your phone and find out the truth.

Not the truth according to your monthly marketing report. Not the truth according to your Facebook page engagement metrics. Not the truth according to the impressions dashboard your agency sends you every month.

The truth according to the AI systems that your potential customers are using right now — today, this morning, while you were reading this — to find the local businesses they need.

That truth is binary. Either you're in the answer or you're not.

And if you're not — everything else in your marketing strategy is secondary to fixing that.

The Full Phone Test — Five Queries in Five Minutes

The single query I opened with tells you something. The full phone test tells you everything.

Here are the five queries that together paint a complete picture of where your Middle Tennessee business stands in the AI search revolution. Run all five. Document every result. Be honest about what you find.

Query One — The Category Search

"Who is the best [your business category] in [your city] Tennessee?"

This is the broadest query — the one that tests your general AI search authority in your primary market. If you're not appearing here you have a foundational visibility problem that affects every other query category.

Query Two — The Specific Service Search

"Who offers [your most important specific service] in [your city] Tennessee?"

This tests whether your service-specific AI signals are working. A Murfreesboro HVAC company might appear in the general HVAC query but disappear for "emergency HVAC repair Murfreesboro" — which means their emergency service signals are weak even if their general category signals are adequate.

Query Three — The New Resident Search

"Find me a [your business category] in [your city] for someone new to the area."

This tests the new resident acquisition signal — the most valuable customer acquisition opportunity in Middle Tennessee's growth market. If you're invisible for this query you're missing the entire new homeowner and new resident customer pipeline that Rutherford County's growth is producing.

Query Four — The Trust Search

"Who is the most trusted [your business category] in [your city] Tennessee?"

This tests your trust infrastructure signals — your BBB rating, your review language specificity, your third-party citations, your community presence. Trust queries are the ones that produce the highest-value customer relationships because they attract clients who are specifically seeking reliability over price.

Query Five — The Competitor Comparison

"Who is better — [your business name] or [your primary competitor's name]?"

This is the most revealing query in the full phone test. It tells you not just whether you're appearing in AI search but how AI evaluates your business relative to the competitors you actually care about. If AI recommends your competitor over you — or if your business doesn't appear in the comparison at all — you know exactly what you're up against.

Scoring Your Phone Test Results

Here's how to interpret what you find.

Five out of five — You're winning.

Your business appears in the AI answer for all five query types. Your AI search authority is strong across your primary market. The work you've done — whether intentional or accidental — has produced genuine AI search visibility. Your priority now is maintaining and expanding that visibility as the competitive landscape evolves.

Three or four out of five — You're competitive but vulnerable.

You're appearing in some AI queries but missing others. The gaps in your visibility are costing you specific customer segments — probably the new resident search or the trust search or the specific service search. Those gaps are fixable and closing them should be your immediate priority.

One or two out of five — You have a significant visibility problem.

You're appearing occasionally — perhaps for your business name directly — but invisible for the category and service queries that produce the most valuable new customer relationships. The foundation of your AI search presence needs significant work before the other elements of your marketing strategy can perform effectively.

Zero out of five — You are invisible.

Your business does not exist in AI search. This is more common than most Middle Tennessee business owners expect — and it's entirely fixable. But it requires acknowledging the problem clearly before the fix can begin.

What the Phone Test Reveals About Your Marketing Investment

Here's the insight that most Middle Tennessee business owners find most clarifying when they run the phone test for the first time.

The phone test result has almost no correlation with marketing spend.

I've run this test with business owners who spend $5,000 per month on Google Ads and fail all five queries. I've run it with business owners who spend almost nothing on marketing and appear in four out of five.

The difference is not money. It's signals.

The business that has built the right AI search signals — consistent NAP, active GBP, specific review language, schema markup, original local content, LinkedIn thought leadership — appears in AI recommendations regardless of how much they're spending on traditional advertising.

The business that is spending significant money on traditional advertising but hasn't built AI search signals is invisible in the customer acquisition channel that matters most in 2026 — regardless of how many impressions their Facebook ads are generating.

The phone test cuts through every vanity metric and every agency report and every marketing spend justification and reveals the only thing that actually matters.

Are customers finding you when they ask AI for help?

The Gap Between Knowing and Doing

I want to be honest about something before I close this post — and this series.

Reading one hundred blog posts about AI search optimization does not optimize your AI search.

Knowing that schema markup matters does not implement schema markup. Understanding that review language specificity drives AI recommendations does not generate specific reviews. Recognizing that LinkedIn thought leadership produces AI citations does not publish LinkedIn articles.

The gap between knowing and doing is where most Middle Tennessee businesses live. They understand the problem. They've read the content. They know what needs to happen.

And the phone is still not ringing the way it should.

Because knowledge without implementation is just expensive education.

The phone test is the moment knowledge has to become action. If you ran it and failed — if your business didn't appear in the AI answers you expected — you now have a choice.

You can close this blog post and go back to whatever you were doing. The knowledge sits in your head. The visibility gap stays in your market. The customers keep finding your competitors through AI search while you wait for the referral network to bring them to you.

Or you can do something about it.

What Doing Something About It Actually Looks Like

Here's the honest, specific, no-sales-pressure description of what fixing a failed phone test actually requires.

It requires approximately thirty minutes per week of consistent effort over six to twelve months. Not thousands of dollars per month in advertising. Not a complete website rebuild. Not a social media team or a content agency or a production budget.

Thirty minutes per week.

Weekly GBP posts. Consistent review generation. NAP consistency maintenance. Gradual content library growth. One LinkedIn article per month. Schema markup implemented once and maintained.

The crock pot. Slow. Consistent. Compounding.

The businesses that commit to that thirty minutes — that trust the compound, that keep putting ingredients in the pot even when the results feel invisible — will look back from twelve months from now with a phone that rings differently.

Not because they spent more. Because they built something that belongs to them.
